Films With Female Leading Roles

You must have seen these movies, and if not you should!

In Hollywood, women rarely get a leading role. Sure, in romantic comedies and your typical chick flick there is usually a female protagonist, but what about more serious roles? Don’t get us wrong, we love our chick flicks! But we also want to see women taking on powerful roles that depict women doing more than pining over a man. Women have so much more to offer than just their looks, so why shouldn’t they be taking on roles that showcase their strength, intelligence, and talent? We want role models for our children — strong female lead roles that show representation for the equality of men and women! Women in Hollywood and in the entertainment industry all over the world want to be taken seriously by playing roles that showcase their ability to play different characters instead of being confined to the typical hot girl. We’ve put together a list of our favorite films with a female protagonist for you, which are also based on real events. Enjoy!

Diana

London 1995. Princess Diana lives separately from Prince Charles at Kensington Palace and is waiting for a divorce. During a visit to the hospital she meets the heart surgeon Dr. Hasnat Khan and falls in love with him. With him, Diana not only finds private happiness, she also discovers that she can use her popularity for charitable purposes. She dreams of a completely normal marriage, even considering moving with the medical doctor to his home country, Pakistan. But the doctor is deterred by the idea. He wants to keep the relationship secret, fears the public and the paparazzi.

The Duchess

An elaborate costume drama about the scandalous aristocrat – an ancestor of Lady Diana. With great expectations of love, 16-year-old Georgiana Spencer looks forward to the wedding arranged by her ambitious mom with an older man, the fifth Duke of Devonshire. However, he treats his dogs better than his wife and loses interest in her because she gives him daughters, not sons. Offended, the clever and pretty duchess plunges into social life and becomes the center of high society. Charles Grey, an ambitious young politician, crosses her path and sparks her interest.

Thelma and Louise (1991)

Best friends, Thelma (Geena Davis) and Louise (Susan Sarandon), go on an adventure to escape the mundane, but everything seems to go south when they begin to be chased by the police after Louise shoots and kills a man for trying to rape Thelma at a bar. Their trip turns into a wild police chase as they try to flee the country while simultaneously meeting a young sexy thief (Brad Pitt) while Detective Slocumb tries to convince them to surrender.

Frida

In 1925 a bus accident throws the fun-loving Frida Kahlo off the track. Severely injured, she remains tied to her bed for months, and learns to express her emotions, fears and insecurities through painting. Freshly recovered, she meets and falls in love with the painter Diego Rivera. Together the eccentric couple take the art world of the USA by storm, but behind the scenes they get into explosive arguments – because Frida suffers from the constant affairs of her husband. After her death in 1954, Kahlo became the most important artist in Mexico.

Booksmart

Academic overachievers and best friends, Amy and Molly believed that keeping to themselves in high school would maintain them ahead of their peers. But close to graduation time, they realize that they both missed out on all the fun of high school times everyone else enjoyed. Realizing that they’ve both missed out on special moments of their teenage years, the girls decide to make up for lost time. Amy and Molly take you on a chaotic adventure of a typical high school night out.
