What Is The Difference Between AHA And BHA Peelings?

Beauty expert Paula Begoun clears up common beauty myths and answers all our questions!

We use them all, don’t we? Because peelings are great for the skin. But which is the right one and what is the difference between AHA and BHA peelings? We talked to beauty expert Paula Begoun and shed light on the dark:

With a good composition, both AHAs (usually glycolic or lactic acid) and BHA (salicylic acid) are excellent options for peeling your skin. Due to a wrinkle-reducing effect, both work against the aging of the skin, stimulate the collagen production and strengthen the skin. However, both products have special properties that you should consider when choosing one of the products:

  • AHAs are preferred for sun-damaged and dry skin as they exfoliate on the skin surface and have the added advantage of improving the skin’s moisture content.
  • BHA is preferred for oily, acne-prone skin and for the treatment of blackheads and pimples, as BHA can penetrate the oil that blocks the pores, and can also normalize the texture of the differently shaped pores that contribute to acne outbreaks.
  • BHA has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, two other reasons to use as a peeling for sensitive, irritated skin (including rosacea and psoriasis).
  • If your skin is sun-damaged and you also suffer from acne or clogged pores, it makes sense to include a BHA in your care routine.

If you prefer to use AHA and BHA simultaneously, this is quite an option, although it is not really necessary. Some people think that the products work well when used at the same time, so there’s nothing wrong with trying.

Like this! Now we’re smarter 🙂 And of course we have selected the right products for you:
