Fashion designer Prabal Gurung has made a clear statement to establish plus size in the fashion industry. This makes our day!
Fashion designer Prabal Gurung declares in an interview about his collaboration with Lane Bryant, being launched on September 25, that in terms of individuality the fashion industry still has ways to go. Time and again, Gurung takes on topics such as diversity, feminism, and escape in his own collections, to consciously draw the society’s attention to the existing differences.
According to him, the existing beauty ideal in fashion is one-dimensional. In the contrary, a large variety of sizes and skin colours should be existing amongst models. Old opinions and ideals desperately need to be reconsidered. And although some designers’ catwalks see models wearing different sizes, it’s still not enough. Some just do not insist and some are just missing the last the enthusiasm to engage in new silhouettes.
When he was once asked by a woman, why he was creating fashion for “heavyweights”, he explained: for the very reason of such statements, to help to banish the negative valuation. Furthermore, we should not expect the fashion designers being only responsible for a change in the fashion industry – we all should claim it strongly. Social media are a great possibility to give people a voice, they can get heard and may provoke change.
Prabal Gurung’s statement made our day! We hope that the fashion industry will develop towards this direction and that more and more designers will understand the importance of addressing to the large variety of women. WE LIKE!
