#whataboutus conquered the net yesterday! What the hashtag is all about
Yesterday evening a wave broke loose on Instagram: The hashtag #whataboutus trended on Instagram. Plus-size blogger Tanja Marfo @kurvenrausch and Julia Kremer @schoenwild starts the action. With the hashtag the two bloggers pointed out the missing presence of the Curvy Community at the About You Awards, which took place on 3 May 18 in Munich.
Many influencers from different industries were invited. But one question remains unanswered: Where are the Curvy bloggers? At the whole event the representatives of the community could not even be counted on one hand. To point out this problem, the two bloggers started the hashtag #whataboutus. They hit the right nerve. According to Tanja Marfo, over 600 posts and Insta stories were published last night with this hashtag. As a result, more people would like the Curvy community to have a much stronger presence and diversity at such events.
Briefly to the About You Awards: The ABOUT YOU Awards are presented each year to the largest, most authentic and interactive social media personalities (according to the official website). And this in the categories Fashion, Beauty, Lifestyle, YouTube, Fitness, Music and Upcoming. Well-known influencers and stars are invited to the award ceremony itself. Felt they all come together.
In addition, the joint campaign asked why the Plus Size community is not being considered, as About You also sells clothes in large sizes. They also asked for a separate category for Curvy Blogger.
We asked About You and received the following statement:
“Our ABOUT YOU philosophy is that everyone can be what they want to be. We support various personalities, give them a platform and love all corners and edges. For us fashion is universal – independent of dress sizes, so we don’t think in terms of drawers. Therefore, we have deliberately decided against any subcategories such as Curvy. We had a colorful mixed guest list with great various guests, which we also do not categorize. “There were 700 influencers on site presenting all categories of the awards.”
